Question #1:

The Confederate states succeeded from the union, elected its own president, printed its own money, and took up arms against the federal government.  Some people might say this was an act of treason.  Do you agree or disagree?  What are your feelings on South Carolina and the other states succeeding from the union?  Do you feel there could have been another way to handle these differences, or was this the only way to solve them?

  1. Personally, I feel that if the states lawfully succeeded from the union, they were a separate entity and therefore no longer a part of the United States; henceforth the concept of treason does not apply here (although many would argue that succession at that time was illegal.) South Carolina succeeding from the United States and the other states that followed evidenced the strong mindsets back in those days, determined to hold onto a specific way of life and the lengths they were willing to go to enforce that. At that time, I feel there would have been no other option. Both sides held strong beliefs and opinions and I feel things were set in motion that could not be undone.
